EDUCATION PLANNING

With college costs continuing to rise faster than the rate of inflation, financing a child's higher education can be a challenge.  Fortunately, there are sound strategies you can use to pay college expenses for your children or grandchildren while keeping an eye on your overall financial goals.  Even if your child or grandchild only has a few years remaining before college, prudent planning can help you save the largest amount in the shortest amount of time. In addition, you may benefit from specific tax advantages for contributing to college expenses.

  1. A 529 plan provides tax advantages when saving and paying for higher education. There are two major types, prepaid tuition plans, and savings plans. Prepaid tuition plans allow the plan holder to pay the beneficiary's tuition and fees at designated institutions in advance. Savings plans are tax-advantaged investment vehicles, similar to IRAs.

  2. The Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) allows a minor to receive gifts, such as money, patents, royalties, real estate and fine art, without the aid of a guardian or trustee. Under the UTMA, the gift giver or an appointed custodian manages the minor's account until the latter is of age. The Act also shields the minor from tax consequences on the gifts, up to a specified value.
